Canadian beef trade update

Following the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's confirmation of an atypical bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) case in Canada on December 17, 2021, South Korea, China and the Philippines have temporarily suspended access for Canadian beef.

Atypical BSE is a distinct form from classical that arises rarely and spontaneously in all cattle populations around the world. This case was detected as part of routine surveillance initiatives and did not enter the food system. The Canadian Cattlemen's Association is working closely with the Government of Canada on this file and working on an overall strategy to seek restoration of these important markets.
